Plan the trip

Bring them in safely.

A calm carrier, the right warmth and a few clues from home help us start the visit with more information and less stress.

Cockatiel travelling safely in a small carrier inside a warmed car

Birds

  • Use a small travel carrier, not the home cage. Take out swings and toys, lay a towel on the carrier floor, and use a low perch only if your bird is steady.
  • Bring a photo of the cage and today’s cage paper folded into a zip bag. Do not clean the cage that morning.
  • In cold weather, warm the car before the bird goes in. Cover the carrier with a light towel and tuck a hand warmer wrapped in a sock against the outside of the carrier, never inside.
  • Never carry a bird outside on your shoulder. A startled bird can fly off in a parking lot.

Reptiles

  • Travel snakes in a tied pillowcase inside a plastic tub with air holes. Travel lizards and tortoises in a ventilated tub with a towel. Turtles travel dry, with a damp towel.
  • Warm the car to about 80°F. Put a wrapped heat pack at one end of the tub so the animal can move away from it.
  • Bring enclosure photos that show thermometer readings, the UVB bulb brand and the month it was last changed, plus a fresh dropping in a bag.

Rabbits & guinea pigs

  • Put hay and a few favorite greens in the carrier. Bring the bonded partner too.
  • A rabbit should keep eating right up to the visit, even on surgery day.
